What is Dowry?
Dowry refers to money, goods, property, or any valuable items that are given by the bride's family to the groom or his family before, during, or after marriage.
In practice, it has become a system of financial exploitation where the bride's family is pressured to meet monetary demands, including cash, jewelry, vehicles, and real estate.

Historically, "Stridhan" was a voluntary gift to the bride for her security. Over time, colonial influences and patriarchy transformed this into a compulsory payment system demanded by the groom's family.

Legal Status & Punishments
Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961
